Mr. Shah’s  scholarly training has been in the area of modern architecture and urbanism in urope and America; however, his research interest over the last decade has shifted closer to home. In 2001, he became a core member of the ‘modern Asian Architecture Network’ (www.m-aan.org), which has conducted research and  organized conferences  in  different Asian countries.  He is the author of ‘Contemporary Indian Architecture’ (2008) and coauthor, with Satish Grover, of ‘Building Beyond Borders’ (1995).  He is the co-editor of ’round’ (round.acetate-ed.net), a journal of writings on Asian architecture, and his  own writings have been published in a number of reputed Indian and international publications. As an architect, Mr. Shah has been associated with the Master Planning and design of the Mizoram University in Aizawl, the Punjab State Institute of Public Administration in Chandigarh, a resort and spa hotel in Dehradun, a flight kitchen for Oberoi Flight Services, and a number of other residential and institutional projects.

From 2007 to 2010, he was Chief Executive of Urban Space Consultants, a start-up planning consultancy  founded by Anil Baijal, IAS (retired), and Analjit Singh, Chairman of the Max Group. Under his leadership, the company delivered advisory services to public clients in four states of the country, including development plans for four cities in Madhya Pradesh, an action plan for revitalization of Old  Kalyan in the Mumbai  Metropolitan  Region, traffic planning for three arteries of Bangalore, and a rainwater harvesting manual for the National Urban Renewal Mission.

Mr. Shah has been a consultant with reputed organizations like the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), Infrastructure Development Finance Company (IDFC), India Foundation for the Arts, Sir Ratan Tata Trust, and Jaipur Virasat Foundation. He has worked on  prestigious projects like the Peer Review of the Master Plan for Delhi 2021 for the Ministry of Urban Development and a study of the BRT systems in Ahmedabad and Delhi for the World Bank.  He formulated a Heritage Policy and Regulations for Surat, Gujarat, which has recently been approved for notification. He is  presently  planning stations for  a Rapid Rail Transit System between  Delhi and  Panipat, and developing a  crafts-based livelihoods programme for the Sir Ratan Tata Trust.

In addition to his professional work in architecture and planning, Mr. Shah has considerable experience in film and television as well. He believes in pursuing every creative opportunity as part of a constant process of learning and growth.  He believes that an institution of lasting value and global repute must cultivate creativity and innovation, and should be dedicated to producing independent and responsible professionals who will define the future of our cities and communities.
