year 2

Year 2 builds on the knowledge and experience of the Foundation Year. Students explore ideas of materiality, detail, production, culture, communication and drawing. Academic activities aim to hone skills that are needed as a designer and creative thinker. Composition, form, structural aesthetics and proportion are critical in becoming a refined thinker – Year 2 takes students on a journey to develop these skills, to expand their critical thinking through a year of activity linking with industry and socially sustainable challenges.

At the core of the course, and bringing together all disciplines and technical studies is the Design module. The module is a series of design projects that explore space through concept, detailing, construction, materiality, politics, metaphor and language. Students work with the design faculty to progress an idea from a concept to a coherent design proposition. The module operates a unit system where students sign up for projects they are interested in.
