A decade of dedication and more in store…
One perhaps looks back in order to have a clearer view of what is yet to come. hopefully, all our dreams for the future too will be much more than a mere match. However, one cannot just rest on reminiscences alone and not move forward! Milestones of events and progress in-action are relevant here because of the distances yet to be covered. Of such relevance is the beginning of Sushant with 40 ‘Pioneers in 1989. it all started in an environment of tall trees and large open space to breathe freely and kick a ball. The ‘pioneers were a handful. they had required I.Q. and aptitude for this new beginning. We started in an abandoned site office of Sushant Lok. The Ansals called it “Bangalli” ! and thanks to their goodwill, it all started there with vedic mantras and planting trees. Ever since there has not been a dull moment, when we have to look back.
The five Architects who pioneered this venture into un-trodden part of learning processes were at the very core of this new beginning. ‘Pioneers’ were each an island, each craggy, tough but full of life and fun. They listened to the voices and were involved in a process of “learning and then doing” – things in a spirit, unfettered from routine modes of learning by “cramming and vomiting” it all in the exams to get marks. ‘Pioneers’ were encouraged to grow wings and take off for unexplored corners of their thinking processes. Pull out expressions not yet tried. Each problem tackled with a spirit of looking for answers within the problem itself.
As more Sushanties joined, exposure to art theatre, cultural events, fashions shows of ‘students own fabrication and presentation began also to happen along with architecture at the core. Incredibly freshness in search of design forms entirely of their fancy started springing up everywhere. Their perspective widened and Janab M.F. Hussain, Smt. Sonal Mansigh, Ramu Gandhi (Mahatamaji’s grandson), Joseph Allen Stein, Dr. Kapila Vatsayan, Maestro Amjad Ali Khan, Dr. Karan Singh, H.Y. Sharda Prasad, Mark Tully and host of others across the oceans extended their warmth of understanding and patronage to Sushant experiment. Our Silent, but fully chartered and motivated mission in search of our Asmita to express contemporary India of art and architecture was in full swing.
Recognition started coming in from unexpected quarters for Sushanties. They won first position in the competition for housing organized by the U.N. on their habitat day celebration. Affiliation to A.C.S.A of American Institute of Architects, Washington D.C. and induction of our students and faculty exchange programme with well known U.S. and U.K. Universities followed. School of Planning and Architecture welcomed Sushanties in their Masters programmes of Urban Design, Landscaping , Conservation etc. Sizable number of our boys and girls successfully crossed the undefined boundaries of expression in contemporary Architecture and entered pursuits of Project Management, Real Estate Consultancy, Real and Virtual world of computers and digital design. Along with this, Art, Graphics, Painting, Conservation of heritage and Urban Design and Planning also kept pace.
In the eleventh chapter of our debut into the new options of Kaleidoscope of eventful changes, we hardly were aware of diploma-degree debate ragging all around. Even then we cast our lot with the Indraprastha University fully hoping that they will appreciate our track record our aims of veracity in approach to learning processes of Art and Architecture and I have had the greatest of pleasure, love and deep involvement in being part of this saga and now in handing over key of understanding it all and much more to Sushanties with a hope that all this shall prevail for a long time and prosper further.
